Govt defends reopening of Harijan Colony road

Shillong, Nov 5: The state government has defended the reopening of Harijan Colony road.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the cabinet minister and spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh said the reopening of the road has nothing to do with the relocation of the 342 families from the area.
The government reopened the road on November 4.
“The decision of government is practical in view of the traffic congestion and the general inconveniences caused to the members of the public for the past 6 years. I don’t see any link between that and the resolution of the current imbroglio vis-a-vis the relocation of the sweepers,” he said.
Some pressure groups and political parties had opposed the reopening of the road by stating that it would further delay the relocation of the residents from Them Iew Mawlong.
“In fact…for the past six years is that things are not in order that area is a troubled zone but today we have removed that image by normalizing movement of people and pedestrians and vehicles in that area. So its a very important positive steps taken towards decongesting the entire city. You know the traffic scenario as it is today and it is not at all linked to the issue,” he said.
The state government has reiterated time and again that it would resolve this matter and we are committed to that. The reopening of Them Iew Mawlong has nothing to do with the resolution of the issue’, he asserted.
