Govt downplays PIL on Tara Ghar, completes new building as State Guest House

Shillong, Sept 16:The Division Bench of the Gauhati High Court had in 2012 stayed the demolition of Tara Ghar based on a PIL to pave the way for the new Assembly Building, but a new building christened State Guest House was inaugurated by the government on Tuesday.
An official statement issued on Tuesday said that the government on Tuesday inaugurated the newly constructed State Guest House, Tara Ghar, Shillong, in a grand ceremony graced by the Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, as the Chief Guest.
Conrad described the inauguration as a milestone achievement, symbolic of the government’s broader commitment to strengthening Meghalaya’s identity and infrastructure. He recalled that since 2018, initiatives such as adopting the state emblem and the state anthem, as well as developing infrastructure like the guest house, have been foundational in building pride and efficiency in governance. He also highlighted Meghalaya’s record economic growth, the government’s continued focus on health and education and ongoing investments around Ward’s Lake to complement the new facility.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, in his address, reflected on the absence of a state guest house for nearly 25 years and underscored the importance of taking decisive action despite criticism. He described the new Guest House as a “gift to the people of Meghalaya,” and urged that it be showcased at the national level, including to the Prime Minister during his visits to the State.
Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang emphasised the significance of the new guest house in strengthening the state’s ability to host distinguished visitors. He noted that the facility, comprising 18 premium rooms including executive and VIP suites, will not only enhance Meghalaya’s image but also result in significant cost savings compared to earlier practices of hosting guests in private hotels.
Earlier, C.V.D. Diengdoh, Commissioner & Secretary, General Administration Department, delivered the welcome address, extending gratitude to all dignitaries and highlighting the vision and effort behind the project. He recalled that work began on September 14, 2022, with the old structure being replaced by the state-of-the-art facility, constructed for Rs 24.91 crore. He noted that operations and maintenance have been entrusted to Hotel Polo Towers through an open competitive bidding process, ensuring world-class hospitality standards.
