Govt encourages community landfill sites to manage garbage disposal
Shillong, Sept 10: The government will encourage community landfill sites to address garbage issues.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Urban Affairs, Sniawbhalang Dhar said he would soon call a meeting to discuss the matter.
“We will be calling a meeting with the deputy commissioners and block development officers on this before the end of September. Let BDOs instruct all headmen of different villages that it is better for them to have their own landfill sites,” he said and cited that villages like Wahiajer in West Jaintia Hills and few others have their own landfill sites.
Umroi airport expansion
Dhar also said the state government is waiting for the feasibility report on whether bigger aircraft can land at the Shillong Airport.
Dhar said, “We are yet to receive the final report from the consultant appointed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI). As soon as we receive the report, we will immediately take a call on the matter.”
The consultant is expected to submit the feasibility report by the last week of October. “We are hopeful that the report is in the positive direction because as a government we too are very concerned about this issue,” Dhar said.
ISBT issue
Dhar said the department wanted the Public Works Department to speed up the construction of the alternative road so that buses can use the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) at Mawlai Mawiong.
Dhar said, “We are trying to request the PWD to complete the alternative road so hopefully when this road is completed, big buses can come and resume their business at the ISBT).”
He said the load restriction on Umiam bridge has affected bus operators and also the shop owners at the ISBT.
