
Shillong, May 15: The Shillong Government College of Engineering (SGCE), Mawlai Kynton Massar has received the letter of approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for launching Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering courses, marking the first government engineering college in the state.
This was announced by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday.
The Shillong Government College of Engineering can start undergraduate courses from 2025-2026.
The courses include civil engineering and electrical engineering with the intake capacity of 30 each.
10 percent seats will be allowed over and above the approved intake to accommodate Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) as per the state government policy.
The letter of approval states that the approval is valid for two years from the date of issue of the letter only for getting affiliation with the respective university/board of technical education (BTE) board of technical education & training (BTET) as applicable and fulfilling state government requirements for admission.
The letter mentions affiliation with NEHU.
If institution is unable to start in the current academic year, the institution will have to apply online on AICTE web portal in next academic session for continuation of approval.
“The applicant society/trust/institution shall send information about commencement of the courses to AICTE. In case the institution is not in a position to commence the courses for whatever reason during the two years’ period from the date of issue of this letter, the approval becomes invalid and the applicant society/trust/institution shall make fresh application to AICTE for grant of approval as per the norms prevailing at that time,” it said.
Conditions laid down by the AICTE
“The management shall provide adequate funds for development of infrastructural, instructional and other facilities as per norms and standards laid down by the council from time to time and for meeting recurring expenditure. The eligibility criteria for admissions shall be made in accordance with the regulation notified by the council from time to time. The tuition and other fees shall be charged as prescribed by the competent authority within the overall criteria prescribed by the council from time to time. No capitation fee shall be charged from the students/guardians of students in any form. If found so, appropriation action as per the notified regulation shall be initiated against the institution”
