Govt finalises name of new women’s panel chief

Shillong, May 14: The state government has finalised the name of chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh  said appointment of the new chairperson will be made once the model code of conduct (MCC) period is over.

Lyngdoh said there has been no delay in the appointment.

“In fact the name has already been cleared. The person concerned has already consented to her appointment. The chief minister has been consulted and has also signed the relevant file. The only thing that prevents us from going public is the operation of the MCC and once this is done we will come up with the name of the new chairperson of the women commission,” he said.

The post has been vacant for almost a year following the resignation of the former MSCW chairperson Phidalia Toi in June last year.

Drug menace

Lyngdoh has emphasized the need to detect and stop the supply of drug and other narcotic substances at the entry points to Meghalaya.

Lyngdoh said, “I have pointed out to the deputy chief minister in-charge home (police) that we need to increase our policing at the entry points. 70% of the narcotics that come to Meghalaya comes from East Jaintia Hills district and policing in that district has to be strengthened.”

Hawkers’ free zone

He said the government is looking to make Khyndailad a hawkers’ free by July this year.

Lyngdoh said that the process of rehabilitating over 200 hawkers will be completed  by the end of June.

“We will be able to complete the entire task by the end of June and we look forward to a hawkers free Khyndailad by the middle of July this year,” he said.

Disrespect to women

The minister attributed the growing trend of crimes against women to the increasing abuse of social media and the lacunae in the Information Technology (IT) policy of the country.

Lyngdoh said, “This is a growing trend which to a very large extent can be attributed to changing moral attitude and the entire outlook of citizens especially given the increasing abuse of social media.”

“You will see that generally if you and I were to converse, we would use decent civil language but once I talk to you over social media, I would use the foulest language possible under the sun.”, he added.
