Govt looks at alternative sites for Harijan Colony relocation

Shillong, July 21: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong has indicated that Mawbah is not final as far as relocation of Harijan Colony is concerned as the government is  looking at other alternative sites.

Tynsong told reporters on Thursday that he had asked the urban affairs department to indicate two-three places in the proposed blueprint for relocation of 342 families of Harijan Colony from Them Iew Mawlong.

There was opposition from the dorbar shnong of Mawbah on the government’s move to allot 3 acres of land near RP Chest Hospital for construction of housing flats to relocate the residents of the Sweepers’ Colony.

Tynsong, however, asserted that relocation will take place and a meeting will be held with the leaders of Harijan Colony once the blue print is ready.

Shillong-Dawki road

The  National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) has started the process of retendering the works for two of the five packages of the Shillong-Dawki road project.

This was after the contractors implementing package 1 and package 5 have surrendered the work recently.

“Let us wait till the tendering process is over then we will know who is again getting the work. Right now I can’t say anything as the tendering process is still on,” Tynsong said.

He said the project is getting delayed because of land acquisition issues. “As far as Meghalaya is concerned, the land tenure system is very peculiar when compared with other states,” he added.
