State puts on hold 8 foreign visits after Modi’s appeal

Shillong, May 27: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has put on hold around 8 foreign visits proposed by various departments.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday ( May 27), the chief minister said that after the appeal by the Prime Minister to ensure austerity measures, in his personal capacity, he decided to stop the foreign tours.

Regarding the recent visits to London, Argentina and Cannes, the chief minister clarified that these were approved before the appeal by the PM.

In a separate statement issued on Wednesday, the Personnel & AR Department said these official visits were planned months in advance and also secured the approval of the Ministry of External Affairs, Govt of India.

“All the visits mentioned in the news article were approved both by the State Government and the Govt of India before the announcement of the travel restrictions. No new foreign visits have been approved after the announcement of travel restrictions by the Prime Minister and the directions issued by the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, the statement added.
