Govt to hold meeting with departments on Umiam lake

KHADC to form town committees to ensure cleanliness under council

Shillong, Feb 17: The state government will convene a joint meeting with related  departments to ensure cleanliness of Umiam Lake.

When asked about the recent order passed by the Meghalaya High Court directing the  government to chalk out a road map for the preservation of the Umiam Lake, the deputy chief minister said he will convene a meeting with the concerned departments.

“We have received the order of the high court, we will have a joint meeting with all the related departments and we will address these issues accordingly,” Tynsong told reporters on  Thursday.

He said not only Umiam lake,the state  needs to talk about the flowing river beds which go down to Umiam Lake like Wahumkhrah and some small rivers from Nongthliew side – ‘so this is a coordinated activity which needs to be attended to.”

To a question, Tynsong said all issues including the need to stop sewages from flowing to the Umiam Lake would also be taken up during the proposed meeting.

AITC seeks answers 

Earlier on Wednesday, the AITC had expressed concern over the state of affairs of the lake and said it has turned into a dumping ground.

The party also wanted to know from the chief minister where did Rs 19.33 crore public money meant for maintaining the lakes go.

“The Division Bench of the Meghalaya High Court has also observed that the executive action in maintaining the lakes in the state is non-existent. Is people’s money going into junkyards in the hands of this government? Can it be concluded that the MDA government’s motive is to rob Meghalaya of its ecological heritage?,, the AITC asked.

KHADC keen to form panels 

The CEM of KHADC, T Chyne convened a meeting of the executive committee on Thursday to discuss about another highcourt order on cleanliness in areas under the council and the need to form committees in this regard.

The KHADC decided to form town committees and the role of the committees would be to  ensure cleanliness in areas under KHADC. 

The KHADC chief decided to seek a  clarification from the state government regarding the  project to clean Wahumkhrah.

According to the CEM, the Centre had released financial assistance to clean the river and the KHADC was part of the project.
