Govt to spend over Rs 22 crore for council polls

Candidates in fray: 158 from KHADC and JHADC -114

Shillong, Feb 4: The government will spend over Rs 22 crore for elections to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).

Commissioner  & Secretary in-charge District Council Affairs (DCA) department Cyril Diengdoh said, “The estimated amount for both the ADCs is about Rs 22 crore.”

Chief Secretary DP Wahlang had reviewed the preparedness during a meeting held on Monday with all the deputy commissioners and sub-divisional officers, he told reporters on Tuesday.

Common platform

He said the decision of the localities to organise a common platform for election campaigning by political parties and contesting candidates will have to be respected.

Diengdoh said holding of meetings is being guided by the model code of conduct (MCC) for political parties and candidates for elections to the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) and the same has been circulated to all political parties that for any public meeting, rally or procession, permission of the deputy commissioner or sub-divisional officer is required.

He said there are certain localities which have decided to have a common platform.

Nominations

The nominations of 272 candidates for the council polls were found to be valid after withdrawal on Tuesday.

Of this, 114 are from JHADC and 158 from KHADC.

There are 19 female candidates of which 12 are from KHADC and 7 are from JHADC.

Earlier on Tuesday, three candidates- Cleofast Bamon from Mukhla-Ummulong, Hermon Phawa from Nartiang-Wahiajer and Opaya Lyngdoh from Rymbai-Khliehriat, withdrew from.contest.

While polling will be held on February 21, the counting of votes will be on February 24.
