Hand over primary education and health to district councils: Bernard Marak
Shillong, July 6: Tura BJP MDC Bernard Marak said after visiting numerous schools and health centres, it was found that primary education and primary health are not the priority concern of the state government as has been assured during election and while taking over these departments from the ADCs.
“Primary education and health should be handed over to the ADCs for proper management. ADCs can handle it better than the state. Primary education and primary health were the two major departments in the ADCs but were taken over by the state after statehood with assurance to enhance but these two institutions deteriorated in years that followed and presently they are surviving on funds sanctioned by the Centre”, Bernard said.
State cared less for education and health in spite of imposing cess taxes from all services and goods. ‘It’s sad to see that these institutions are running pathetically in all the villages without much support from the state. Therefore, primary education and health should be handed over to the ADCs as that is what has been agreed in the Agreed Text for Settlement”, Bernard added.
The agreed text for settlement was signed with the ANVC.
According to Bernard, he is concerned because poor families cannot afford to send their children to private schools as it is very expensive, so primary schools should have been made better in the villages to ensure firm foundation. Political leaders have compromised on education and health sectors. Nobody has contributed and no effort was made to better the facilities to the voters, he added.
