Harijan panel seeks three months, govt sets April 10 deadline

Shillong, March 16: The MDA-2 government has set a deadline of April 10 to the Harijan Panchayat Committee (HPC) to make clear its stand on the relocation of the Harijan Colony.

The HPC had sought three months’ time to reply.

The proposal of the government is for relocating 342 families from Them Iew Mawlong to the the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) complex.

“We have already given the blueprint on the government’s proposal to them and we have given them to reply till April 10,” Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Urban Affairs Sniawbhalang Dhar told reporters on Thursday.

He carried out a review meeting on the matter.

Dhar said the department has not agreed to the request of the HPC  to give them more time and hence ‘we wanted them to reply till April 10,” Dhar said.

After this, the high level committee (HLC) will call a meeting to take a final decision on the matter, he said.

To a question, the deputy chief minister said, “We will hear first from their (HPC) side and after that we will be able to tell you what we should do and what we should not do. It is not advisable for me to tell now on what we will do.”
