Hawkers’ body writes to special officer on relocation anomalies

Shillong, Aug 4:The hawkers’ body and three members of the Provisional Town Vending Committee (PTVC) other than the government, have petitioned the High Court-appointed special officer regarding various anomalies in the relocation of hawkers and street vendors
The letter written to the special officer on July 26 narrates the anomalies like non-availability of final list of authorised/licenced vendors, eviction of genuine hawkers in absence of a final
list of licensed vendors, and confusion during forced relocation in MUDA Parking Lot on July 23,
One-size-fit-all approach has been adopted in setting up the vending stalls and
even the execution has been done mindlessly, Rangad said, adding that there are no standard operating procedure (SOP) or formal guidelines were issued for relocation.
Other issues include multiple lotteries in the same area; no stamp and sign on the stall number receipt; one stall is allocated to multiple vendors among others.
Food vendors who have been allocated in front of MUDA are also forced to move inside the MUDA Parking Lot.
Genuine hawkers who are surveyed but have not been given a licence are left
stranded and have no space to vend, which is a complete violation of the
Street Vendors Act 2014, Angela said.
