Hotels but no med colleges: TMC jibe at NPP

Shillong, Feb 17: The Trinamool Congress on Friday took a jibe at the NPP-led Meghalaya government saying it has built hotels but has paid no heed to medical colleges.

Addressing a public meeting at Police Bazar on Friday, both Derek O’Brien, TMC’s Rajya Sabha MP, and Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s national general secretary, said it was a shame that the state does not have a medical college.

“The government built Vivanta hotel, which is good, and some other hotel. But what about a medical college,” said O’Brien.

Banerjee said West Bengal, which is governed by the Trinamool Congress, has 23 medical colleges and the party would ensure that Meghalaya too gets colleges. “There are 12 districts in the state and there should have been at least 12 medical colleges,” he added.

Banerjee also scoffed at BJP’s claim that it would start inquiry into all corruption cases if they come to power.

“It was part of the Meghalaya government. So, who will it investigate? Will Amit Shah investigate Amit Shah? Will BJP investigate Conrad Sangma,” he said.

Reiterating that TMC is the only party that has been challenging BJP despite threats from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the CBI. “Conrad is scared to speak against BJP because he thinks the ED and CBI will come after him,” he added.
