Shillong,Aug 8: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has asked state government to set up its own University in the city and the Shillong campus of the Captain Williamson Sangma State University besides regulating fees in government aided and non-government aided educational institutions in the state.
In a memorandum submitted to the education minister Rakkam A Sangma, HYC general secretary Roykupar Synrem said in the backdrop of the controversy regarding the implementation of the NEP-2020 and the problems faced by the Students of the State in getting the opportunity to pursue their higher studies in NEHU due to limited number of seats and with CUET being implemented for admission to NEHU, it has become an urgent need for the State Government to take necessary steps to establish its own State University in the State Capital of Shillong for the betterment of the students and youths of the state.
The Meghalaya government recently inaugurated the Captain Williamson Sangma State University in Garo Hills, Synrem said, “We would like to impress upon the Government to take immediate steps for making it operational and in order to bring its administration closer to the people, the Regional Campus/office under the headship of Pro-Vice Chancellor and a full-fledged Registrar need to be set up in Khasi-Jaintia Hills region.”
Synrem said the minister assured that the government will soon come up with the Shillong campus of the Captain Williamson Sangma State University.
Stressing the need to fix and regulate the fees charged by government aided and non-government aided educational institutions in the state, Synrem said, “We appreciate the contributions made by all of them in taking our State forwards in this sector. However, we cannot also deny the fact that there should be a system in place to check the fee structures and fixation of fees for all these educational institutions in the State so that education does not become a service beyond the reach of the lower strata of the society. Education should be made accessible to all sections of the Society and hence a system should be put in place for the regulation of the fees in these institutions in the State by enacting an appropriate legislation at the earliest.”
The HYC has also urged the state government to extend financial assistance and supports to the colleges in the state for implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020.
“Therefore, we urge upon you and the Government to make all out efforts to assist the educational institutions in the State so that our students and the parents are not in anyway being burdened too much in the process and our Colleges are able to implement NEP smoothly and successfully,”Synrem said.
The HYC general secretary said that the Council had also requested the minister to take steps for setting up CUET centres in all district headquarters from the next academics year. At present, students from Meghalaya are facing a lot of problems especially when they are being alloted the examination centres outside the state for appearing CUET examination.
He said the government was urged to introduce the aptitude and logical reasoning as one of the important subjects at the school level.
“Hence, in order to prepare our students for this very important subject, it is suggested that schools should be directed to introduce a subject on aptitude and logical reasoning so that it will be helpful for our students,” Synrem said.
The HYC also urged the state government to provide alternative educational institutions to over 200 students from the state, who were studying in Manipur.
Synrem said at present the conflict in the State of Manipur does not seem to subside anytime soon as per various reports and hence the fate and career of these over 200 students from the State who were, all these times studying in various institutions in Manipur, are hanging in balance.
“They have already lost precious academic time of more than 3 months and no one knows when the conflict will end also. Therefore, it is requested that the State Government should take necessary steps to provide for alternative educational institutions for these affected students”, the HYC said.
