HYC seeks apology from Karbi council chief on Mukroh

Shillong, Nov 30: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has demanded apology from Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) chief Tuliram Ronghang for stating that the Khasi-Pnar residents of Mukroh are illegal settlers.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the HYC general secretary Roy Kupar Synrem said the MDA government and chief executive member (CEM) of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) should take immediate note of the comment made by Ronghang.

“An immediate apology has to be issued on the aggravating comment made by the CEM of KAAC,” he said.

Synrem said resonating the Assam government’s murderous silence, the CEM of KAAC has recently expressed his imperialistic comment that the village Mukroh falls within the boundaries of Assam.

Ronghang had remarked that Mukroh village in Jaintia falls under Karbi Anglong district. He also termed the Khasi-Pnar residents of the village, already subjected to police brutality, as illegal settlers.

Synrem pointed out that in a desperate attempt to mask the tragic Mukroh killings, the MDA government has been acting shamelessly as a complicit to the Assam government.

“Following several attempts to sell away the Meghalayan heritage land to Assam in the border talks, the MDA government’s long-drawn silence puts the blood of the victims at the hand of Chief Minister Conrad Sangma,” he said.

“MDA government’s compliance to Assam government on the Border MoU has led to this unwarranted show of power by the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government of Assam,” Synrem added.
