JNC warns truckers against plying overloaded vehicles on broken EJH bridge

Shillong, Feb 13: Members of the Jaiñtia National Council (JNC) -Sumer Circle on Tuesday took a strong stand against heavy vehicles passing through Ri Manar bridge at Samasi in Sumer, East Jaintia Hills.

The JNC team, led by president Sakilan Chyrmang, said the iron bridge was in poor condition and the loaded trucks are making its condition worse.

“The iron bridge is in a pitiful condition. The bridge floor and bridge girders are in a precarious condition. The screws and bolts are loosening with the continuous passing of the trucks,” JNC said in a statement.

The Council also asked truckers to stop or decrease the load or else “face the consequences”. It appealed to the people of Sumer to support the cause as the bridge is “the only backbone” of transportation here.

Earlier, JNC had written to the department concerned for the repair of the “40-year-old bridge” but with no avail. “To ensure the safety of the commuters, truckers should take a limit of up to 9 tonnes as per the rule and we are letting no one pass by with overloading the limits,” said Sakilan Chyrmang.
