Shillong, May 29: A person from Jorhat was arrested for outraging the modesty of two school students in the city.
In a statement issued by East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem, on May 24, information was received from various quarters of a video footage which had gone viral on social media whereby it was seen that a school girl had been sexually assaulted by a masked person who had lifted the apparel of the victim and taken photographs through his mobile phone. A special team was formed on May 26 led by Addl. Superintendent of Police (Ops), East Khasi Hills, Shillong, Ivan B. Diengdoh to identify and nab the culprit.
In this connection, the place of occurrence was identified which was at Umsohsun (lane going to YWCA) and the date of occurrence was on May 23. The victim of the case was identified and examined whereby it was ascertained that the incident had occurred around 6:35 am for which an FIR was received and Lumdiengjri PS Case number 55(05)2025 U/s 76/79 BNS R/w Sec. 11/12 POCSO Act was registered. Another FIR was also lodged in Sadar P.S whereby another school girl was sexually assaulted on May19 between 7:15 am and 7:30 am, on the steps near Dreamland, Police Bazar for which Sadar PS Case number 140(5)2025 u/s 7/8 POCSO Act was registered. Both cases were treated as Special Report cases considering the sensitivity of the matter.
The special team in a matter of 3 days identified the accused Himan Gogoi (24 ) of Jorhat, Assam and a team under WPSI Lavinia Kongwang left for Jorhat on May 28 and in the morning, a joint raid with Lahdoigarh OutPost of Jorhat was conducted and the accused Gogoi was apprehended from his relative’s house in Bamkukurachua village, under Teok P.S, Jorhat. The police team recovered the mobile phone used by the accused and other incriminating evidences which have been seized. He is also found to be involved in Teok P.S Case No. 43(03)25 u/s 329(3)/79 BNS Act.
The accused will be produced in the District Court, Jorhat and after acquiring transit remand, he will be produced in a court in Shillong.
