Karbi man killed after clash between Meghalaya-Assam villagers

Shillong, Oct 9: A Karbi villager died after a scuffle between villagers in the disputed Lapangap area in West Jaintia Hills and West Karbi-Anglong.

A police official said that on Thursday morning, harvesting commenced at Lapangap village under the security cover of Meghalaya and Assam police personnel.

However, multiple scuffles ensued between residents of Lapangap ( Meghalaya) and Tahpat ( Assam ) villages

In the melee, one person from the Karbi side was reported to be dead, police said. There was no lethal force used by police from either side. So it appears that death is due to violence between the villagers only, the official said.

The victim has been identified as Orivel Timung (45), son of  Sarpang Timung, from Tapat village.

The harvesting has been completely stopped till further orders.

Since the place of occurrence falls under Meghalaya, a case was registered under Nartiang Police Station under sections – 103(1),117(3),117(4),119(1),121(1),121(2),189(1)-191(3),195(1),195(2),329(1),331(5),332 and 333 of BNS
