KHADC pays tribute to Rev JJM Nichols Roy
Shillong, Nov 1: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has paid tribute to Rev JJM Nichols Roy known as father of the Sixth Schedule
The occasion was his 65th death anniversary.
KHADC chief Pyniaid Sing Syiem along with the members of his executive committee laid floral wreaths on Friday in front of the monument of Rev JJM Nichols Roy, on the council’s premises.
The function was organized jointly with the JJM Nichols-Roy Memorial Committee and the JJM Nichols Roy College.
Addressing the gathering, Pyniaid said it was Rev JJM Nichols Roy who took part in the drafting of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution and it was in 1952 that the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) were formed in India.
Syiem said there are 10 ADCs in the entire North East which aims to protect the indigenous communities.
“In the past other ADCs of the North East did not know about JJM Nichols Roy but through the measures taken by the KHADC, now even other ADCs have recognized JJM Nichols-Roy as one of the great personalities of the country” Syiem said.
He said the Tripura Territorial Council had proposed to erect a monument of Rev JJM Nichols Roy in Agartala.
