KHADC sends delimitation proposal to govt ahead of polls

An official source said on Saturday that the delimitation proposal was sent this month.

The proposal is for adjustment of large  constituencies like Mawlai and others but the number of constituencies will remain the same, the official said, adding that the purpose is to rationalise the number of  voters.

The process is to set up a delimitation committee following which approval will be obtained from the governor.

The official added that this has nothing to do with the pending amendment of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution which had suggested increase in the number of seats in all the three district councils.

“The nod to the amendment will take its own time by the Centre as it is busy with the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and hence the polls to KHADC and JHADC may not be delayed in the name of amendment”, the official added.

The state government is expected to discuss the matter after Puja holidays.

When contacted, the KHADC deputy CEM PN Syiem said the proposal is for adjustment of voters in the KHADC constituencies so that there is a parity in the number of voters especially in some bigger constituencies.
