KHADC warns of action against violation of lineage act

Shillong,June 17: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) made it clear that the persons who violate the provisions of the Khasi Lineage Act will be deprived of their Khasi status.
The summer season of the KHADC began on Wednesday(June 17)
Questions were raised. by NPP MDC Grace Kharpuri of Nongshken and Opposition Leader Titosstarwell Chyne ( Sohra) as to the action by the KHADC against the persons who violate provisions of the Khasi Lineage Act.
In response , Executive Member in-charge of Legal Affairs Deity H Majaw warned of action against Khasi individuals who break the Lineage Act stating that they risk losing their community status.
Kharpuri wanted to know response from the KHADC on people who do know take mother’s surname under the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (Lineage) Act, 1997 as amended.
Chyne sought questioned whether the Act strengthens the practice of adopting the mother’s surname.
Majaw pointed out that the Act, read with the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) Act, 2007, mandates that section 10 penalises violations.
“Those who violate the act will be deprived as Khasi community. Those who renounce themselves as Khasi community will be removed from Khasi status, If both the parents are Khasis, the offspring will also remain Khasi”, she said.
She replied ‘yes’ on whether the Act strengthens the custom of taking the mother’s surname
