Kharkrang reveals corruption in police force
Shillong, Feb 18: Retired police official Mariahom Kharkrang, who is contesting on a BJP ticket from North Shillong, said a right-hand man of a former Director General of Police (DGP) is lodged in a jail because of corrupt practices.
“And who was heading the police department, I will put this question to you,” Kharkrang said on Saturday.
He was speaking at a common platform organised by the Wahingdoh Dorbar Shnong for candidates of the North Shillong constituency.
Kharkrang also accused the former DGP of destroying the police force.
He reminded the people that he along with his colleague had met the deputy chief minister to ensure a clean officer is appointed as DGP.
“In the end the corrupt one wins. Then I understood I cannot be there so I went on deputation to the prison department because I cannot allow a person who just came yesterday to destroy the department. I am not a yes man. For me black is black and white is white,” he added.
On political parties promising to generate 3 lakh and 5 lakh jobs, he said the fact is that they can’t even fill up over 7,000 vacancies of sanctioned posts and from where they will generate employment.
He said appointing on contractual basis is another way of exploiting the youth who are paid meager amount against a full time job.
The former IPS officer criticised the government for the failed tourism policy by saying that people from Assam are getting the benefits out of the tourism industry in Meghalaya.
“If we cannot develop our tourism industry in such a way that it can provide jobs to local youth, then what is the point,” he said.
Asking the people to vote for the BJP, Kharkrang said, “Whatever we do, we have to depend on the central government. If you vote for the BJP, you will not regret because it will surely bring development to the state. However, if you make a mistake this time you will regret it. Your children will ask you why you did not vote for the BJP.”
The BJP leader assured to come up with a transparent recruitment policy in all government departments if he is elected as MLA.
According to Kharkrang, the transparent recruitment policy is being implemented only in the police force.
He said in the absence of a transparent policy, youth have lost faith in the recruitment process as they would often express apprehension that somebody has already been appointed even before the examination is conducted.
“As far as the reservation policy is concerned, we have seen 11 posts of LDA advertised out of which 9 are for Garos and only 4 are for Khasis, I don’t know what kind of reservation we are talking about. We are killing ourselves,” he added.
