According to the residents, there has been a surge in the bills since the installation of pre-paid smart meters.
President of the KSU Nongmensong unit  J Pohthmi told reporters that the below- poverty- line residents were  paying Rs 500-600 per month previously for electricity but  after the installation of smart meters, the bills have increased to Rs 2000 per month.
The KSU urged the minister to retain
the previous fee for a month’s recharge of Rs 500-600.
Smart meter issue
Mondal said the issue of overbilling by smart meters will be examined.
“Smart meter is being mandated by the Ministry of Power and all the states are implementing smart meters and accordingly we also need to implement the smart meters. The question of over billing will be looked into and if needed we can have two meters side by side to see exactly how the difference is coming. So this issue will be looked into,” Mondal said.
