KSU wants MPSC reforms within a week

Shillong, Jan 19: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) has set one-week ultimatum to the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC) to implement reforms recommended by the MPSC Reforms Committee in its report submitted to the state government last year, for ensuring transparency and fairness in the job recruitment processes.
Speaking to journalists on Monday, KSU Employment Cell Chairman Reuben Najiar stated that despite the committee’s report being submitted in August 2025, no changes have been implemented, prompting the union to meet MPSC Chairman D Langstang.
“The chairman said that the commission is still studying the matter, but there’s nothing to study about it. The recommendations are for MPSC to implement,” Najiar said,.
“Accordingly, we have given one week time to the MPSC chairman to implement the changes which related to the disclosure of marks and other reforms which are there in the report so that there will be some transparency in the recruitment process because as of now we have seen there is no transparency in the recruitment process,” he said.
Najiar said the KSU had demanded disclosure of marks, objective-type examinations for Grade C and D posts, and advertisements targeting Meghalaya domiciles only.
Alleging the MPSC of bringing different policies to manipulate the examination, Najiar said, “One such instances is the typist examination which has been conducted in the month of November 2025. We have seen most of the time for these grade C and D posts , examination has to be done through multiple choice questions and the examination must be done in an objective type but this time around they have brought it through descriptive form and why they want to bring a descriptive form of examination so that they can manipulate the marks because in objective types if there is 50 questions and if you get 20 correct answers no one can change it but in descriptive it depends on the examiner whether he will give you 10 or 30 marks or whatever marks it depends on him and neither the court can also intervene in that matter. So they want to manipulate such kinds of marks so that they can fill in their own candidates.”
“They want to manipulate marks through descriptive examinations, filling in their own candidates, while eligible candidates are denied employment,” Najiar said
He added: “We have objected against that and stated that such kind of practice will not be entertained and the other thing is that the advertisement henceforth should not be for citizens of India but it should be for domiciles of Meghalaya as this is practices all over the NE region as state jobs are only meant for the domicile of that state itself and not meant for all over India.”
The KSU leader said the union suspects MPSC’s reluctance to implement reforms stems from a desire to maintain opacity in recruitment.
“They do not want to implement these changes or reforms as they are okay with the current system, which is corrupted and which can fill in their own candidates whereas eligible and promising candidates are not getting employment whereas people with connections and people who can pay a large sum of money they are getting employed. If they are to bring this kind of system then obviously they will put under the scanner as people will know their marks and how much they are getting in the interview and people will start raising question. As of now, who writes in the examination, who gets what marks they don’t know, they only know after result gets published and these are the particular names who have passed but they dont know and even if they file RTI also they will not get. That is why they hesitate to bring these kinds of changes as if they do so there will be a transparent recruitment…,” Najiar said.
The KSU has warned of agitations if reforms aren’t implemented within a week.
“…if the Commission fails to implement the reforms, it will be forced to take extreme measures, including stopping recruitment processes until changes are made,” the KSU said in the letter to the MPSC chairman.
