Over 200 killed as London-bound AI aircraft crashes in Ahmedabad

Plane crashed into medical hostel leading to deaths of 'medical students, doctors'

Shillong, June 12 (Agencies): More than 200 people were killed when an Ahmedabad-London Air India aircraft (AI171) crashed near the airport shortly after taking off.

The Boeing Dreamliner departed from Ahmedabad airport at 1.39 pm and crashed within five minutes of take-off. According to the State Police Control Room, the aircraft was carrying 242 people, including 12 crew. Emergency teams are rushing to the crash site near IGB Ground in Ahmedabad.

Reports said there were 242 people on board, including 12 crew members. There were over 160 Indian passengers.

The aircraft crashed into a medical hostel. “It’s a black day for the Indian Medical fraternity My hand trembles as i write this knowing that the Air India flight crash on BJMC medical college UG hostel in Ahmedabad has costed us the lives of our Medical students , Doctors and other horrifying casualties It was during the lunch hours and The Medical students were in their mess while the tragedy happened,” wrote one Dr Dhruv Chauhan on X.

According to Flightradar24, the aircraft involved in the Air India #AI171 crash is a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with registration number VT-ANB and serial number 36279. The first flight of the aircraft was on December 14, 2013. It was delivered to Air India in January 2014.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma wrote on X, “Shocked and saddened by the tragic accident of the air India flight going from Ahmedabad to London. Our prayers are with all the family members of passengers who were on board the aircraft.”
