Mahila Cong against Foreign Contribution Regulation Act amendment

Shillong, March 27: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress under the leadership of Joplyn Scott Shylla condemned the recently introduced amendment to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) in the Lok Sabha, terming it deeply dangerous and alarming in its implications for civil society and democratic functioning in India.
“This amendment is a direct attack on non-governmental organisations, grassroots movements, and civil society groups that play a crucial role in safeguarding democracy, human rights, and social justice. By tightening restrictions on the receipt and utilization of foreign funds, the government is effectively attempting to silence dissent, weaken independent voices, and curtail the functioning of organizations working for the welfare of marginalized communities,Shylla said.
The Mahila Congress said it believes that such measures are not only undemocratic but also reflect a growing pattern of centralisation of power and suppression of accountability. Women-led organisations and grassroots initiatives, which depend significantly on external support, will be among the worst affected.
At a time when India needs stronger institutions and inclusive participation, this amendment moves in the opposite direction shrinking democratic space and undermining the spirit of the Constitution, Shylla said.
The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress urged the government to withdraw this draconian amendment and engage in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders to ensure that transparency does not come at the cost of democracy and fundamental freedoms.
