Mahila Cong chief seeks action against street dogs

Shillong, May 7: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress, under the leadership of Joplyn Scott Shylla, condemned the  failure of the authorities in addressing the escalating stray dog issue in Shillong.

“What was once a manageable issue has now turned into a serious public safety threat. Packs of stray dogs are openly roaming the streets, chasing and attacking morning joggers and even pet dogs on leash. Citizens now live in fear while stepping out of their homes this is absolutely unacceptable”, said Joplyn Scott Shylla in a statement.

According to Shylla, the continued inaction and negligence of the government and concerned departments have allowed the situation to spiral out of control.

Authorities please wake up and take your duties seriously. We want to make it clear: this is not just an animal issue it is a law and order and public safety issue. The safety of women, children, and senior citizens is being compromised every single day”, she said.

Shylla sought immediate, visible, and time bound action from the government.

“This must include strict and effective stray dog control measures, large scale sterilization and vaccination drives, and proper monitoring of high risk areas like Laitumkhrah and others”, she added.

If the government continues to remain indifferent, the Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress will be compelled to take this issue to the streets and launch strong public protests. The people of Shillong will not remain silent while their safety is ignored, she added.
