Shillong, Dec 26: Mahila Congress and Meghalaya BJP have criticised hate against Christians during Christmas.

In a statement, the Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress President Joplyn Scott Shylla condemned the actions of the Bajrang Dal in Rajpur and parts of Assam for allegedly instigating violence and intimidation against members of the Christian community during the peaceful celebration of Christmas.

In a separate statement. Mariahom Kharkrang, Chief Spokesperson BJP Meghalaya Pradesh demanded harshest punishment for those vitiating Christmas season*

“Christmas is a festival that celebrates the bond of love which unites every living being on earth. It’s a festival that’s celebrated with zeal and fervour by every community in the nation and holds a special place in the hearts of every Indian, irrespective of caste, creed or religion. A visit to many parts of the country leaves one awestruck at the scale and gaiety of the festivities that are indulged in by one and all on Christmas Day.

“Within this backdrop, it’s painful to see a handful of individuals indulging in acts of hate, with the sole objective of disrupting, disrespecting and disturbing the spirit of Christmas and the message of universal love. Such acts go against the very nature of Indian civilisation, attacks every principle, each value that we hold dear and paints an entire nation in a negative hue”, he said.

BJP, as a party, believes in the unity and equality of all religions, holds firm faith in the Constitution of India and stands ready to fiercely protect each citizen’s right to celebrate every festival, in a manner that an individual deems fit. This remains non-negotiable for every member of our party!

“There are some, who for narrow political gains, are working hard to establish acts of few petty criminals as orchestrated and planned organisational programs. Meghalaya BJP would like to point out that the Honourable Prime Minister himself, along with top party leaders, participates in Christmas service year after year, 2025 being no exception It’s an example that serves as an inspiration for every member of our party. Can the parties who are trying to turn criminal acts into political mileage provide one example of their non Christian leaders taking part in Christmas celebrations?

According to  Kharkrang, the BJP Meghalaya stands with every ordinary Indian in demanding that the criminals who have carried out these deplorable acts and have offended the sentiment of every citizen of our nation be arrested, be tried and be punished according to the strictest provisions under the law. Meanwhile leaders and office bearers of BJP Meghalaya are in constant touch with counterparts in states where such acts have been committed, to ensure not a single individual enagaged in such acts evades punishment, he added.

However, Congress Mahila leader said such acts of hatred and aggression against a religious minority are deeply disturbing and go against the core values of India’s Constitution, which guarantees freedom of religion, equality, and harmony among all communities. Christmas is a festival of peace, love, and goodwill, and any attempt to disrupt it through fear and violence is unacceptable.

“The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress stands in complete solidarity with the Christian community and urges the concerned state authorities to take swift and strict action against those responsible. We also appeal to all citizens and organizations to maintain communal harmony and respect the diverse cultural and religious fabric of our nation.

Violence and intolerance have no place in a democratic society. Peace, unity, and mutual respect must prevail, she said.
