Major fire averted at Raid Laban School; chowkidar’s shed damaged

Shillong, July 13: A major fire was averted at Raid Laban Secondary School, Madan Laban, here on Sunday afternoon.

However, the adjacent shed where the Chowkidar and his family stayed, was damaged.

The incident took place after 1 pm when the children of the chowkidar were having food and one of them felt burnt smell of electric wire and saw smoke outside. The  parents, who were informed, alerted the local authorities and the Principal of the school.

The school with Assam-type structure was established in 1972.

According to the principal of the school, M Lyngdoh, thanks to the active participation of the residents and the timely arrival of the fire tenders, the fire was brought under control.

Free movement on Sunday helped the fire engines to reach the school on time.

No injury was reported though five family members of the chowkidar were at the house.

The headman of Madan Laban, I.Sun appreciated the support of the residents and the fire tenders resulting in dousing the fire and preventing it from spreading to the school.

Three fire tenders left the place around 4 pm.
