Along with Tariang and his supporters, many Congress members joined the NPP and the occasion was also for confirmation of East Shillong Block Executive Comittee.

Tariang had unsuccessfully contested the Assembly polls in the past.

Tariang was in the forefront against corruption especially when the Meghalaya House scam rocked the state years ago.

In 2008, Tariang unsuccessfully contested as an independent candidate against Ampareen Lyngdoh (then with UDP) from the then Laitumkhrah constituency.

Later, when Ampareen rejoined the Congress, Tariang chose to contest from the UDP in the by-poll held in 2009. Tariang could not win the seat.

Curiously, Tariang will be supporting Ampareen this time.

As a professor, he was associated with the college teachers’ association and the YMCA.
