Shillong, April 23: A man was found hanging on the flag pole of Laban police station, on Thursday(April 23) morning.
A source said that the person came in an auto rickshaw before 7 am, and hanged himself on the flag pole using the rope on the Laban police station premises.
Only a guard was present.
Police are gathering details about the deceased.
The CCTVs at the police station have not been functioning for the last two years, and the matter was taken up with the police headquarters .
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Vivek Syiem said the deceased was identified as Mithun Gurung (38) from Lumparing. He was found hanging by a home guard volunteer on duty.
The incident happened in the wee hours when the gates are open for the public to come.
“In fact, the home guard volunteer had seen this person outside the gate but nobody expected that because hanging could happen in a few seconds only, it happened so fast. This person entered the police station at 6.43pm and after 7 minutes police found out that he had hanged himself,” Syiem said while terming the incident ‘unfortunate’.
When asked, the SP said, “From the history of this person, it appears that he is mentally disturbed and also has a history of alcoholism. So that could be a reason. Because of his alcoholic problems we have gathered, he has problems with hallucination. Probably hallucination can come where a person feels threatened and going to a police station would be a choice of this person.”
CCTV issues
“It is not a question of CCTV issues but in fact, the CCTV inside the police station, yes, it is malfunctioning temporarily and we have taken up to get it rectified but we have got footages from the Smart City and surrounding neighborhood footages (that is why) it took time (to identify the person) because nobody has given any missing report,” he added.
