Mawkynrew Sohphlang festival on December 5-6

Shillong, Oct 23: The Mawkynrew Sohphlang Eco-Cultural Indigenous Society will host the third edition of the Sohphlang Festival on December 5-6 at Lad Kharang, Jongksha, in East Khasi Hills.
Speaking to the media, Carmel Lyngdoh, spokesperson of the organising society, said the festival aims to promote and economically empower the Sohphlang-growing farmers of Mawkynrew.
“This is not just a food festival — it is a farmers’ festival. Our main focus is to honour the hands that grow Sohphlang,” said Lyngdoh.
He stated that over the past two editions, the festival recorded strong public participation and even attracted tourists from outside Meghalaya.
Society president Pynbianglang Kshiar reassured that there will be no shortage of Sohphlang supply during the two-day celebration.
“We have made special arrangements to ensure that Sohphlang is sufficiently available for sale and tasting during the festival. Although the harvesting cycle was slightly delayed this year, we have secured enough from local farmers,” he said.
