MCA president’s push brings cricket academy to life ahead of PM’s virtual opening

Shillong, Apr 27: The Meghalaya Cricket Association’s (MCA) Indoor Cricket Academy at Kurkalang, Meghalaya, is set for formal inauguration on April 28 as part of a landmark ceremony in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate Indoor Stadiums across all six northeastern states from Sikkim.

For the occasion, MCA President, James P.K. Sangma, extended a formal invitation to all members associated and affiliated with the MCA to be present at the Kurkalang Indoor Cricket Academy.

The inauguration marks the culmination of a sustained push to revive and complete a facility that had remained unfinished for several months under the previous administration.

“I had requested the intervention of Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to fast-track the completion of the Academy. I am grateful that due to his interventions, the Indoor Cricket Academy is now ready to be inaugurated and used,” Sangma said.

Among the most notable achievements in the run-up to the inauguration was the provision of electrical power to the facility. After taking over as President, Sangma had previously requested power connectivity from the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL). This was secured in a record 12 days.

This swift resolution cleared a primary obstacle to the Academy becoming operational and ensured the facility was ready for inauguration within the required timeframe.

“It is indeed a great honour to have the Prime Minister inaugurate the Indoor Cricket Academy. This will mean a great deal for our State and the Northeast collectively in boosting cricket in the region,” Sangma said.

“It is my priority to make the best use of this facility, which the BCCI has provided to our State. I have already discussed with various Committees, such as the Cricket Advisory Sub-Committee composed of senior former players, regarding planning activities in the Indoor Cricket Academy for our players,” he elaborated.

The Indoor Cricket Academy at Kurkalang, developed with support from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is expected to significantly enhance training infrastructure for cricketers across Meghalaya by providing a state-of-the-art indoor facility for year-round practice and development.
