COMSO flags illegal immigration risk in EJH after Assam evictions

Shillong, July 31: The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisation (COMSO) Jaintia region has expressed apprehensions about illegal immigrants entering the state in the wake of the ongoing eviction drive in Assam.
A delegation, led by its vice-chairman Sambormi Lyngdoh, submitted a memorandum to East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner Sivansh Avasthi on Thursday.
“Assam has prohibited non-Indians from residing within its borders, leading to concerns that those expelled may seek refuge in East Jaintia and settle in our area,” a media statement issued by COMSO said.
The Ministry of Home Affairs recently instructed all states to establish Special Task Forces (STFs) to monitor and prevent the illegal entry of foreigners into India. However, the deputy commissioner stated that the district administration had not received directives from the state government regarding the formation of STFs.
Avasthi told the COMSO members that there would be a meeting between the Waheh Chnongs of East Jaintia Hills and government officials to explore strategies for preventing illegal entry and organise raids in certain villages where “foreigners may be hiding”.
