Meghalaya in a bottle: Global journey of Cherrapunjee jin
Shillong,Nov 19: How the water with botanical elements of Meghalaya and the region can be marketed is the story of Cherrapunji jin from entrepreneur Mayukh Hazarika born and brought up in the city.
A stall for promotion of the product was put up during the Cherry Blossom Festival held on Nov 15 and 16 at Bhoirymbong, Ri Bhoi and for sale at Ward’s Lake at the ongoing Shillong Literary Festival which will conclude on Nov 20.
It was during Covid during a visit to Sohra that the idea struck Mayukh, the son of Shillong advocate Binu Hazarika
“Cherrapunji(Sohra)and Mawsynram are the rainiest places on earth. It was the right time for anyone to explore the use of water. My idea was to turn the water into a product and present it in a way that has not been done before. The result is Cherrapunji jin. Unlike other bottles, the product is in stainless steel bottle and very light which can be reused which is not a norm in the alcohol industry. It is India’s most award winning jin. The ingredients are botanical elements and oranges from Khasi Hills besides cardamoms from other parts of the Northeast”, said Mayukh.
Two rain water units- in Umiam and Sohra- were installed to collect water to make jin.
“The product caught the attention of the globe as it is exported world wide winning awards too”, Mayukh said.
