Shillong, May 11: The state cabinet on Tuesday approved restructuring of Special Force-10 and Amendment of the Meghalaya Special Force (Amendment) Rules, 2016 to enable redeployment of SF-10 personnel.

The Special Force known as SF-10 was formed by the erstwhile Congress-led government to fight militancy, especially in Garo Hills.

The cabinet wanted to redeploy SF 10 personnel as militancy is on the wane in Garo Hills and there is shortage of personnel for normal law and order duty.

Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said that the actual strength of the SF-10 is 1387 out of the total recruitment of 1784.

Out of 1387,  905 personnel will be retained in SF-10 and  the remaining 482 will be deployed in different districts.

“Out of 905 personnel,183 will be posted at SF-10 headquarters, 361 at the tactical base of Eastern Range which will be at the 1st MLP battalion and 361 at the tactical base of Western Range at 2nd MLP battalion,” Rymbui said.

According to the home minister, since militancy has come down, the service of SF-10 personnel will be used to tackle other crimes in districts.
