Misplaced tribal priorities threaten Meghalaya

People of Mawkynrew must reflect on the larger picture — the undeniable importance of education

The events at Mawkynrew Village in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district highlight an unfortunate conflict between progress and misplaced priorities. While cultural traditions and local governance deserve respect, the issue of land allocation for a school should be viewed through a lens that prioritizes the greater good—education.

Land allocation to the Ramakrishna Mission School was done after receiving a no-objection certificate from the previous “Sordar”.

A village chief’s decision, made with due process, represents a collective agreement for the benefit of the community. Opposing such a decision simply because of a change in leadership undermines the authority of the position and sets a dangerous precedent for governance. If every incumbent leader revokes their predecessor’s decisions, it risks plunging the community into perpetual chaos and stagnation.

Education is a transformative tool, particularly in a state like Meghalaya, where access to quality education remains a significant challenge.

The Ramakrishna Mission has a proven track record of providing quality education across India, often in the most underserved regions. Rejecting an opportunity for children to receive quality education in a state that has struggled with literacy and educational infrastructure is shortsighted and counterproductive.

The argument that the land was previously allocated as a playground for a sports club lacks weight when compared to the immense societal value a school brings. A school serves not just a select few but an entire generation, fostering development, progress and self-reliance.

Sports can be encouraged alongside education, but denying children access to quality schooling based on such claims is unjustifiable.

The mob’s actions, fuelled by emotions and possibly misinformation, reflect a failure to engage in constructive dialogue. Resorting to vandalism and clashes only erodes trust within the community and diminishes the possibility of a peaceful resolution.

If there are legitimate grievances, they should be addressed through legal and democratic means rather than violence and chaos.

Traditional and elected leaders must prioritise the community’s long-term welfare. The incumbent Sordar should recognise that the decision to allocate land to the school aligns with the state’s broader goals of enhancing literacy and development. Personal or political differences should not stand in the way of decisions that benefit future generations.

Meghalaya’s lush jungles and natural beauty are an asset, but it is crucial not to let these symbolise its developmental state. The state’s future hinges on empowering its youth through education, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to overcome systemic challenges.

Progress cannot be held hostage by regressive mindsets that prioritize short-term or individual interests over collective growth.

The people of Mawkynrew, led by their leaders, must reflect on the larger picture: the undeniable importance of education in uplifting their community and state.

Instead of opposing the Ramakrishna Mission School, they should embrace it as an opportunity for progress. Dialogue, understanding, and commitment to the greater good can turn this conflict into a stepping stone toward Meghalaya’s brighter, more educated future.
