Missing miners yet to be traced, NDRF joins search team

Shillong, June 2: The five missing coal mine workers are yet to be traced even after the search for them from Monday after they were trapped in a flooded mine at Umpleng under Sutnga Elaka, East Jaintia Hills on Sunday.

The East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner, E Kharmalki said the personnel of the State Disaster Response Force and Fire and Emergency Services team reached the surface of the flooded shaft.

However, they could not spot anything due to poor visibility.

Besides, the rain has also hampered the work.

The SDRF calculated the depth of the water inside the shaft as 153 feet but the depth from the surface of the water up to the ground level has not  been ascertained, the deputy commissioner said.

Three high power pumps were being brought and one was currently being used to dewater the coal pit.

The NDRF team is expected to lead the search operations from Thursday.

The Assistant Commandant, NDRF has arrived in the afternoon and the rest of the team comprising 30 personnel were scheduled to arrive on Wednesday night.

The police have already issued a look-out notice for the manager of the coal mine identified as  Nizam Uddin, a resident of Bartal village near Ingla Bazar, Karimganj district of Assam.
