Missions to fail if deaths of pigs, cattle not controlled

Shillong, Feb 20: Opposition Leader Ronnie Lyngdoh has alerted the government that if the deaths of pigs and cattle are not controlled, the related missions will fail.

The purpose of the government to help the farmers by distribution of piglets will be defeated if measures are not taken to prevent deaths of pigs in the state, he added.

He pointed out raising a supplementary question that many villagers in his constituency are jobless due to the death of cattle and some of them have become labourers.

During the question hour, Congress MLA Charles Marngar (Mawhati) raised the issue of death of pigs in his constituency.

He wanted the government to consider giving compensation to farmers due to death of pigs.
In reply, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister AL Hek said no compensation is provided to the farmers since they can claim insurance at Rs 4,000 per pig.
Ronnie said the purpose of the government to help the farmers by distribution of piglets will be defeated if measures are not taken to prevent deaths of pigs in the state.
He wanted Hek to pursue with the Prime Minister for setting up of veterinary hospitals in the state since he is a  senior BJP leader from Meghalaya.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the government has a proposal to construct the veterinary hospital.
