Mizoram MP demands President Rule in Manipur
Aizawl, Nov 20 (UNI): K. Vanlalvena, Mizoram’s lone Rajya Sabha member, on Wednesday called for the immediate imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur, asserting that merely replacing Chief Minister N. Biren Singh would not resolve the ongoing ethnic violence.
“The situation in Manipur has deteriorated to a point where replacing the chief minister will not address the deep-rooted ethnic problems,” Vanlalvena said. He argued that the state police have been overwhelmed by the scale of the crisis, as armed groups from both Meitei and tribal communities possess firepower exceeding that of the police force.
“The solution lies in deploying the strength of central military forces,” he said, advocating the imposition of President’s rule as the first necessary step toward lasting peace. He also called for a central team, under army protection, to demarcate lands occupied by the Meitei and tribal communities, creating a buffer zone to prevent further clashes.
Vanlalvena proposed the creation of a separate administrative unit for Meitei-inhabited areas and a distinct administration for ethnic Mizo territories.
Regarding calls by some legislators to replace Biren Singh as chief minister, Vanlalvena dismissed the suggestion, stating, “At this stage, changing the chief minister will not suffice. The unchecked violence has deeply affected both communities, and a more decisive approach is needed.” he said.
