Shillong, Aug 21:Opposition leader Mukul Sangma has cautioned the government to address the unemployment issue to prevent the revival of insurgency in the state.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Mukul said there are inputs about educated youths joining militancy and getting training.
His response was following the recent seizure of the HNLC flag in the city.
Later, there was an incident of miscreants throwing a petrol bomb at Pasteur Beat House.
He pointed out the plight of educated yet unemployed youth in the rural areas of the state.
“If they (govt) say they don’t know, then it is their failure or their usual denial mode, but the reality is alarming. Inputs indicate that many qualified youth with professional degrees, out of frustration and anger, have resorted to rebellion,” Mukul said.
He wanted the government to take proactive measures to address unemployment, as frustration will lead to anger and ultimately to rebellion.
Illegalities over mining activities
Mukul also said Rs 500 crore GST fraud involving several coke plants in Meghalaya is due to patronage from those who are in authority.
Recently, revenue intelligence and enforcement directorate (ED) officials carried out raids across Meghalaya and Assam, which revealed tax evasion and illegal mining activities.
“Whatever has been revealed through the media only confirms what we have been saying all along that illegalities of this scale cannot thrive without patronage from people in authority,” Mukul said.
