Mukul Sangma finally speaks about GHADC crisis

Editor,

I was pleased to see that the former Chief Minister of Meghalaya has spoken through the Shillong media about the seriousness of the prolonged financial crisis in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), which has reached the point of being unable to clear the salaries of its 1,200 employees. The salaries were not paid for 43 months, and the total amount is Rs 270 crore. We can well imagine the plight of the employees and their families. The Conrad Sangma-led government should have found a way to advance at least 12 months’ salary to the GHADC to ease the over-stressed plight of the employees, who are our fellow human beings of Garo Hills. This is the right way forward, though it may not be easy, but it is a pittance compared to many urgent set-aside expenditures on flimsy purposes.

Now, on the future plight of the TMC and himself, Dr. Sangma was candid while saying that he cannot comment much and let the future take care of itself. He was also candid in expressing that he had no regret about leaving the Congress. The question that many have is whether he and three others will stick to TMC or switch over to the NPP or BJP? He already replied that let the future take care of itself. But he has no worries at all, for options are many for people experienced and sharp like him. However, to remain in TMC, join NPP or BJP or VPP is not likely. People like him really should have no worries at all. Many opportunities are opened to him not only in politics.
Yours etc.,
Philip Marwein
