Muster roll workers unhappy with govt

Shillong, Feb 11: The Joint Action Committee of the Muster Roll Labour Union has expressed frustration over the Meghalaya government’s inaction on implementing the Labour Code 2025, which would provide social security benefits to daily wage workers.
“We are surprised that since November 2025, the state government of Meghalaya has not given any notification to implement the labour code in Meghalaya,” Chairman of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) K Pariat told reporters on Wednesday.
“We had taken up the issue of labour code and the labour department informed us that they are in the process of making the state rules but despite lapse of more than six months they are yet to implement it.
The Labour Code 2025, directed by the Government of India, promises benefits such as pension, employee provident fund, and social security for workers. However, the Meghalaya government is yet to implement it, despite repeated memoranda from the union, Pariat said.
The union has raised concerns over the non-implementation of the Employee Provident Fund (EPF) and the lack of notification on the consumer price index, despite the Government of India slashing GST rates on essential commodities.
“One egg costs us Rs 10, and dal is Rs 100 per kg, which is higher than other states,” Pariat said.
The Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, had invited the union for talks, but there’s been no response.
