Senapati (Manipur), Sept 10 (NNN): The United Naga Council (UNC) on Wednesday received a formal invitation from the Centre to resume the dialogue on the Free Movement Regime (FMR) and the border fencing.
The government invitation, signed by Manipur chief secretary Dr Puneet Kumar Goel, said the central government had noted the concerns raised by the UNC and other stakeholders.
“Accordingly, the Central government has been holding and will continue to hold dialogue with the UNC and other stakeholders for prior consultations before fencing works are taken up. The next tripartite meeting with the UNC will be held on a mutually convenient date and venue. In view of the above, it is requested that any form of agitation in this regard may be withdrawn in the larger public interest,” the government invitation said.
Following this invitation from the government, UNC leaders informed Newmai News Network tonight that an emergency “presidential council meeting” of the United Naga Council will be convened at its office at 12.30 pm on September 11 to discuss “urgent matters relating to the ongoing trade embargo”. The UNC said “esteemed tribe presidents” will participate in the meeting.
Meanwhile, sources said the UNC is likely to suspend the ongoing “trade embargo” before the dialogue takes place.
It can be noted here that, following the failure of the talk on the issues of Free Movement Regime (FMR) and border fencing between the United Naga Council (UNC) led Naga organisations and the representatives of the Government of India on August 26 in Delhi, the UNC has enforced “trade embargo in Naga areas” under its jurisdiction from the midnight of September 8, 2025, until further notification.
