NEUFC conclude Super Cup campaign with 2-1 win over FC Goa

Fatorda, Nov 1: NorthEast United FC wrapped up their AIFF Super Cup campaign on a high, defeating defending champions FC Goa 2-1 in their final Group B fixture at the Fatorda Stadium on Saturday.

Chema Nunez (68’) netted for the second successive match to hand the Highlanders the lead before Sahil Tavora (72’) levelled for the hosts. However, young defender Robin Yadav (76’) rose the highest to head home his first-ever goal for the club, restoring NorthEast United’s advantage.

“Today, it was important to stay focused to get the result. The team showed great attitude, we went for the game and showed that there’s no difference between FC Goa and us. I am proud of the team,” Juan Pedro Benali, head coach, NorthEast United FC, said after the game.

Both sides began cautiously, feeling their way into the contest. The Highlanders’ first major opening came on the half-hour mark when skipper Michel Zabaco found Alaaeddine Ajaraie with a precise long ball, but the Moroccan’s effort drifted narrowly wide.

At the other end, India U-23 goalkeeper Dipesh Chauhan was in inspired form, pulling off a string of impressive saves, including a one-on-one stop against Udanta Singh late in the first half, to ensure the teams went into the break goalless.

Benali introduced Jairo Samperio and Jithin MS after the restart to add attacking impetus, and the changes soon paid off. In the 68th minute, Bekey Oram slid a clever pass to Jithin, who released Ajaraie down the left flank. He spun his marker and pulled the ball for Chema, who fired a composed first-time finish into the far corner.

FC Goa equalised four minutes later through Tavora after a scramble inside the box, but NorthEast United responded almost immediately. A short corner routine between Andy Rodríguez and Chema saw Andy whip in a delightful cross that Robin Yadav nodded past the goalkeeper to seal all three points.

The Highlanders continued to press in the closing stages, maintaining control to secure a well-deserved win and end their Super Cup campaign on a positive note.
