New Village Defence Party to be launched in city

Fight against drugs

Shillong, March 5: A new Village Defence Party will be launched in Nongsohphoh Upper Mawprem next week.

This is part of an anti-narcotic task force’s (ANTF) plan to involve traditional heads in the fight against drugs.

Speaking to reporters, Lyngdoh said, “This evening itself, I had an interaction with the SP ANTF and we have already gone ahead and decided with the dorbar shnong of a major hotspot in the city which is dorbar shnong of Nongsohphoh Upper Mawprem to formally launch the VDP of that area on March 13.

He said it will be the second such unit in Shillong, where only 12 VDPs now exist.

“We are trying to encourage more dorbar shnongs to come forward to partner with the department so we have footsoldiers against the menace working in tandem with the state police,” Lyngdoh said.

“We have stepped into new territories which have not been covered earlier. You will appreciate that the government is absolutely serious to tackle drug menace,” he added.

On the reports of a former Manipur MLA allegedly trafficking drugs into Meghalaya, Lyngdoh said he had seen the stories but would discuss operational details with Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Home (Police), who is away from Shillong
