Shillong, March 17: The Centre for Environment Protection and Rural Development (CEPARD) has petitioned NGT, Kolkata to probe the illegal coal mining activities occurring in Olwang Peak, Rongsu Agal Aking Land, South Garo Hills, approximately 8.5 km from Balpakram National Park (BNP). These activities are being carried out in direct violation of environmental laws and are orchestrated by Dagu N. Marak, Nire N. Marak, and others, alleged a statement issued by CEPARD, on Monday.
“Despite the NGT’s ban on unscientific coal mining in Meghalaya, illegal operations persist, leading to severe deforestation, land degradation, and pollution of vital water sources like the Rongkai and Rongri Rivers. Additionally, unauthorized roadways have been constructed via the Kalu area to facilitate coal transportation. These activities violate the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Act, 2015, the Environmental Protection Act, 1986, and the Hon’ble Supreme Court and NGT directives”, said the joint petition filed by the Chief Executive Officer, CEPARD Cherian G Momin and president Samgar R Sangma
To highlight the extent of environmental damage, the petitioner attached geo-tagged photographic evidence and supporting documents.
They urged the NGT to conduct an independent investigation and field inspection, initiate strict legal action against those responsible, and stop all illegal mining activities and implement stringent monitoring.
The activists wanted the NGT to direct
Meghalaya government to enforce regulations and prevent unauthorized coal transportation,
implement restoration and ecological rehabilitation measures to mitigate environmental damage.
“CEPARD remains committed to environmental conservation and legal compliance, and we trust in the wisdom of the Hon’ble Tribunal to take necessary action to safeguard Meghalaya’s fragile ecosystem”, said the petitioner.
