NIT opens computer training centre for visually impaired
Shillong, May 26: NIT Meghalaya has opened a Computer Training Centre at its temporary campus at Bijni Complex, Laitumkhrah for the visually impaired to enhance their livelihood. There are around 2300 visually impaired people in Meghalaya.
The centre was inaugurated by Maya Alag and Sunil Alagh, Chairman, BoG, NIT Meghalaya. The Director of NIT Meghalaya, Prof. Pinakeswar Mahanta and others were present. The center was developed by the team lead by Dr. Bunil Kumar Balabantaray, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering. Members from Blind Lead Trust led by Jitendra Dkhar (Co-Founder Managing Director), Bandwina Khymdeit (secretary), Kanai Debnath (Trustee) and Kamdathmu Langstang (Trustee) were present.
At the training centre, the visually impaired people will be given basic training on Microsoft Office, Excel, document writing, web browsing, social media related knowledge. The course will be for two months. In the first batch,10 people will be admitted and certificates will be given from NIT Meghalaya. To develop the livelihood of differently abled people, NIT Meghalaya will develop a special skill development centre at its main campus at Shora.
