No Dog, No Vote: Animal lovers send their silent message

Shillong, Jan 5: Animal lovers in the city came together on Sunday to protest against the Supreme Court’s judgment to relocate stray dogs from public places.

The protest was part of the nationwide Do or Die protest for the voiceless animals. A protest was also scheduled in Kolkata, but it was reportedly cancelled in the last hour. Protesters came out in hundreds in other cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru.

The demand of the protesters is to have humane policies for stray animals. The protest at Khyndailad in Shillong was a silent protest for the strays.

In some cities, like Mumbai, animal lovers warned that if their voices are ignored, then they may form a political forum to take the cause forward.

One of the placards upheld by protesters in Shillong read, “Awara nehi, Hamara hai (not strays, they belong to us). No Dog. No Vote.”

The nationwide protest was triggered by SC’s last year judgment where it said that the strays must be removed from all public places and relocated.
