Shillong, May 15: The perennial issue of traffic snarl is attributed to lack of adequate land in the city.
Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Public Works Department (Roads) Prestone Tynsong told reporters that the government is facing challenge in addressing the problem of traffic congestion in Shillong due to scarcity of land.
He said the department has identified a few places for construction of some sort of bypasses within Shillong keeping in mind that the size of the city roads remain the same whereas the volume of traffic keeps increasing almost every day.
He said the government is looking at the junction at the Anjalee Petrol Pump but the land again falls under the defence authority.
“We have already requested the defence authority to provide us this space where we can construct an intermediate lane where we can just make it one way where you don’t have to go through the Anjalee petrol pump but you can bypass it from there straight away you can go to Sohra or maybe to Pynursla from there.”
“We have identified Anjalee petrol pump as a place where traffic is uncontrollable. Therefore, if wle get land then we will immediately start construction of the bypass,” he said.
The Meghalaya High Court recently asked the state government to come up with long-term and short-term plans to address the traffic congestion.
